I am still not decided at all on what and how to show my work at this "Crit @ The Mall Galleries" on Thursday !
May "The Force" be with me !
This last minute "Eye of the Storm" pressure is similar to that of deadlines encountered whilst engaged in the course of academic studies I underwent so many years ago at The University of The Arts London...
Come on! Let's get this rusty machinery back into action and deliver a unique, memorable for all parties, me included, presentation of my work as an artist, of me, the individual as an artist, of my vision as an artist, because self-taught as an artist or not, (I did Digital Media Production and Enterprise and Management for the Creative Arts, not Fine-Art as such, at uni), I have been doing this almost forever.
My mum was herself a student in fine-art at the Beaux-Arts Academy of Paris when she had me in her tommy... Art Art Art. That's what it has always been about. The rest being life-material, the Earth and nourishment to grow Art, in any form possible.
At the moment there are a few projects that I develop side by side in my Art-practice.
There is a funny one, themed "JOYCE@The Ladies", where I appear as director, camera woman, fashion designer, make-up artist, "Star" or just humble model and dancer, in as many different guises as possible in as many loos as possible (they make wonderful photo and film studios, have mirrors (very useful props) usually good lighting and come relatively cheap as one may even be lucky to be accepted, with a smiling request, for a visit free of charge... alternatively, they make great souvenirs for milestones in one's peregrinations in Life. The idea being, in proper "Selfie" mode, to always project as cheerful and some may like to say "cheesy" faces and poses as possible.
One of my father's ambitions for his daughter had been for me to become a cheer-leader, incidentally, when I was with him, in my teens... I was also the model and "star" for his inventions' commercials and experimental movies, in Venice, LA. That project is probably a throw-back through time, to him, with the best of my abilities, also in a desperate urge to maintain positivity and enthusiasm in a world so needy of that kind of energy, in every way it may manifest.
I have been collecting material for this project, mainly via the use of a darling little compact digital camera, 10 MegaPixels resolution, throughout the best of the past 3 years or so. Some of theses selfies have appeared as such on this website, on Facebook, in rare prints and numerous business cards. "Be Your Own Celebrity" standing as one of my favourite mission statements. You've got to love yourself, hey! As work in progress, they are on the verge of being edited into some form of film comprising stills and moving images that some fellow ladies, encountered here and there on the shoot, have expressed delighted anticipation for !
Another one of my art projects, and not the least, is still stored within hard-drives, and at the heart of my continually evolving fine-art studio space, in waiting for the moment when I will finally be ready (and the embryo seems to be starting to kick within my entrails now) to start giving birth to it... My Art is my Child... Mac machine, whilst and after the editing process... Making the film from about 2 years of persistent readjustments of my immersive studio installation where the film / photo-set / stage / protagonists and story change gradually throughout the weeks, months, years. On 2 occasions, the public has had the chance, physically, to engage with the work, as the Arthouse, where my fine-art studio is located, opened it's doors to the public: May 2014 and October 2015. The first immersive studio installation they came to discover was called "Joyous Riots". The last one simply: "Predominantly Yellow". Both have gathered thrilled responses from visitors exited by the novelty of the format and by what is clearly an exhilarating mode of expression, 3D, that one may live in for a moment... even comprising specially concocted odours within a closed door cabinet awaiting openings...
Now, there is a film showing at the Tate Modern this Wednesday which I would love to have the chance to see which raises the question: "Can we consider an exhibition in the form of film ?" Well I guess that is what I am working on. Have been working on for the past 2 years...
Which is not that long considering I worked on "The Cars Series" for 7 years...
It had started in 20oo with "The Good Bad Dream", based metaphorically on what I perceived at the time to be the beginning of the 3rd World War, and ended in 2oo7 when I had decided to move onto a less Love / Hate relationship with the subject of Cars (as I am a dedicated rambler and cyclist that never drives) to that of a truly beloved one: "The Horses Series". Of these, viewers of this site can see a number of examples in the adjacent pages.
So now. Enough BlaBla. Let's get on with that "Crit" presentation. In terms of images. For after all I am a visual artist. "What" and "How" to show them? I will see about "Why" later. As for "When", I know I have about 20 mns, if the other presenters stick to schedule that is... 20 to 24 mns ... I know it's in a nice spacious comfortable well located and renowned gallery for having been there on a number of occasion... The Mall Galleries. The leafy avenue that leads to Buckingham Palace, right opposite St James Park. I can even go and "chill-out" at the Institute of Contemporary Arts' cafe bar a few doors away when I am sure to have arrived there with equipment and materials etc. and relax before 3.30PM, or 3PM, or even 2.30PM preliminary introductions to the staff and team @ Q Art as well as technicians, most importantly, hopefully...
Will my little Mac iBook G4, purchased second-hand from The London Film and Video Workshop a few years ago help me out ? It does not support the Flash version needed to show my short films of the "http://vimeo.com/joycesanimations website", I found out today. Just too old, by one number...OS 10.5 instead of 10.6. What to do ? I don't feel like running around begging a friend to lend me their machine as I probably would never do that myself... Oh no no no !
So my best bet may be to create a page, with adjoining still images, as they already appear somewhere else on this very site.
Cup of tea.
News on TV.
Back to it. Well hey ! The iBook does show the slide shows actually! So that will help clarify a "How" question. And "What" as well, after all: I could just show the audience my 60+ images of horses. But that may be too lazy; not enough of a challenge, and not recent enough. Let's try better. Later. Tomorrow. As for now, it's way past midnight again. Despite the recent events in Paris, than Mali, Belgium, and that I could even sense permeating within the immediate society around me this evening as I went out, I need to go to sleep and be fresh for a good productive day tomorrow.
Long live the Arts ! In Joy, despite all odds. Vigorous and triomphant ! And while writing that I think of the artist from west-Berlin Jonathan Meesse whom I discovered on Youtube recently. Art above it all ! Beyond ideologies, religions, politics ! Art above it all !!!! Night night. Bisous XXXX To all the "Whom"s out there !
May "The Force" be with me !
